Opening Day is an annual nationwide celebration of trails promoted by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. This year, Friends of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail will host several activities to encourage users of all ages, abilities, and interests to get outdoors and learn more about our unique linear park. Attend one or many of the exciting options offered throughout the day! 8:00?9:00 AM... Bird and Tree Identification Walk: Before the trail gets active with runners, bikers, and families, take an early morning walk with local bird enthusiast Melissa Kinsey and Goshen City Forester Aaron Sawatsky Kingsley. Meet at Abshire Park in Goshen. 9:00 AM?12:00 PM... Bike Checks at Abshire Park: Chain Reaction Bicycle Project (CRBP) will be at Abshire Park to help make sure your bike is ready for the season. CRBP is a non-profit bicycle shop promoting bicycling in the Goshen community and increasing access to bicycles/repairs for people with low income and on work-release. 9:00 AM?2:00 PM... ?Pokervine? Chase: Combine a run or bike ride with a bit of fun competition! Participants will visit five stops along the trail to collect a randomly selected card from each, to finish with a five-card poker hand. One runner and one cyclist will be selected as grand prize winners, determined by the best poker hand at the end of the event. Prizes to be determined. Details: Scorecard pickup (on event day only) and post-event awards celebration will be located at Pumpkinvine Cyclery in Middlebury (413 N Main St). Scorecards can be purchased online (https://pokervine-chase-2016.eventbrite.com/) for $8 each until noon on Friday, April 15 or for $10 each between 9:00 AM?12:00 PM on event day. Up to five scorecards may be played by each registrant. Completed cards must be delivered back to Pumpkinvine Cyclery by 2:00 PM and prizes will be awarded at 3:00 PM. All trail supporters, whether you completed the pokervine chase or not, are encouraged to attend the awards celebration at Pumpkinvine Cyclery. Winners do not need to be present to win. 1:00?2:30 PM... 3.5-mile Group Fitness Walk: Get your heart rate up and meet other walkers on this brisk round-trip walk between Abshire Park and CR 28. The group will be led by Vivian Schmucker. Meet at Abshire Park. 3:00*?4:30 PM Wildflower Hike Join John Smith, local amateur naturalist and native plant enthusiast, on a search for the first blooming native wildflowers of spring. The hike will begin at 3:00 PM at the intersection of the trail with CR 33 and will explore the natural hardwood forest between trail mile markers 4.0 and 5.0. There are no parking spots at the CR 33 trailhead. Two suggested ways to arrive include: * Meet at 2:15 PM at Abshire Park for a 5-mile group bike ride to the site. * Meet at 2:45 PM at the Pumpkinvine Trail parking lot at CR 35 to carpool.
