Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a course that gives people the skills to identify, understand, and properly respond to the signs and symptoms of an individual who is experiencing a mental health challenge. Just as CPR training helps a person with no clinical training to assist an individual following a heart attack- MHFA training helps a person assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis such as someone contemplating non-suicidal self injury or suicide. In both situation, the goal is to helps support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives.
