Topic: Our Water Resource in the era of Climate Change
Speaker: Matt Meersman, Director of the Saint Joseph River Basin Commission, president of the Friends of the St. Joe River Association, and founder of the Two Rivers Coalition.
Matt will talk about the value of our water resources in the context of a changing climate. As residents of the Great Lakes watershed, we have access to one of the most abundant fresh-water resources in the world. Responsibility for and stewardship of this resource are likely to be increasingly important issues for the people of our region.

Topic: The Urban Forest and Climate Change
Speaker: Carrie Tauscher, State Community and Urban Forest Coordinator, Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Carrie works throughout Indiana with community urban forestry assistance and grant programs, advocating for the many benefits of the urban forest, and directs the Indiana Community Tree Stewards training program.
Carrie will speak about the social, economic and ecological roles that urban trees play in helping communities prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Trees are among the cheapest and most effective “infrastructure” for climate change mitigation, especially in urban settings.

Topic: Human Health and Climate Change
Speaker: Gabe Filippelli, PH.D., IUPUI, Director, Center for Urban Health, Department of Earth Sciences, lead author of the “Hoosier’s Health in a Changing Climate” report of the Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment from Purdue University.
Gabe will speak about various impacts to human health related to our warming climate, from extreme heat in the summer to air quality issues, from increases in tick and mosquito populations to flood vulnerabilities. He will help us to think about the role we play in preparing our communities and ourselves for these changes.
This talk will be presented as a live tele-conference.

Topic: Energy Efficiency
Speaker: Goshen College graduating seniors in Sustainability Studies, other TBA.
Goshen College seniors will present on their capstone project – an energy audit which they have been conducting at the Rieth Interpretive Center. Their research will help to lay the groundwork for ongoing efforts throughout municipal facilities.

Topic: Climate Action Planning in Goshen

This meeting will introduce more formally the concepts of a “climate action plan”, and explore what such a plan might mean and achieve for Goshen. It will be an opportunity to learn about the reasons the City is working towards a climate action plan, as well as an opportunity to ask questions, give input and have conversation.
