Feb 27 - Mar 8 Lifelong Learning Institute class: Reading Genesis Well
Led by Paul Keim, this course will explore the book of Genesis using four different interpretive lenses. First, we will read Genesis within the context of other ancient origin stories. Second, we will take a literary approach, piecing together the puzzle of its careful composition and tracing its echoes. Third, we will plunge into the fascinating world of Midrash, the rabbinic interpretive tradition that interweaves elements of law, customary wisdom and exhortation. Finally, we will consider non-linear interpretations of Genesis themes, as reflected in art, music and poetry. The richly-textured and open-ended portrait that emerges is intended to enflame our theological imagination and illuminate our path. Paul Keim is Professor of Bible, Religion and Philosophy at Goshen College and Adjunct Lecturer in Biblical Languages at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary.

A note from Steve Brenneman, MEDA member and CEO of Aluminum Trailer Company:
"Anabaptists with European roots are an odd and distinctive group.  I have been observing some unique characteristics within my heritage over the last 5 years or so. These characteristics lend themselves toward organizational skills, timeliness, dependability, empathy, and efficiency. Sometimes to a fault, we like order and we hate waste. Back in 2008 I lost one of my manufacturing companies that the local MEDA group had toured in 2005. Losing Nappanee Window was one of the most painful experiences of my life. We had such a great company and had been so successful but we hadn’t paid much attention to improving the processes that we used to build and run the business. I was also new to the business world and was trying to learn as I went in my career. I made some decisions that eventually caused us to lose the business during that difficult business environment.
Out of that experience I began, in 2009, to fundamentally change my other business, which is the Aluminum Trailer Company.  I picked up a book on lean manufacturing and read about many of the mistakes that we had made and how we could change for the better.  Lean is the North American version of the Toyota system of manufacturing based on the scientific method used to continuously improve any business, system or process.  As I have studied Lean Thinking and the scientific method for the past 8 years, I have realized that there are many similarities between lean thinking and Anabaptist thinking.  I have several Mennonite artifacts to prove it.  I welcome you to join me at our new state of the art 100,000 square foot facility in Nappanee on March 17th for an interesting view of how we can live out our calling and succeed in business by living out our unique continuous improvement tendencies.  You will see ways to improve the way we keep our factories, our pantries, our kitchens and our lives. It’s a lean life!" -- Steve Brenneman

Mar 26 - Mar 29 Lifelong Learning class: J. Lawrence Burkholder on Mennonite Ethics: from Isolation to Engagement
Led by Lauren Friesen, the lectures will cover three forthcoming volumes on this topic. In Volume I, Burkholder explores the strengths and limitations of the stance Mennonites took on nonconformity, which meant withdrawal from society. Volume II expands an analysis of the limitations and proposes a solution whereby Mennonites can continue their ethical stance but become engaged in nonviolent solutions to social problems. Volume III applies the ideas in real-life situations. He concludes that nonviolent action on the local/congregational level is needed to continue our peace witness and resolve tensions in the world, introducing the concept of ambiguity as an ethical value while recognizing that the former absolutes no longer are viable. Lauren Friesen is the David M. French Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan and a Certified Docent at the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago.
